In our last blog, we suggested some easy steps toward better physical wellbeing (from diet to exercise and plenty of other tips in between), so this time we’re going to talk about the steps you can take towards better mental and emotional wellbeing. You may find, though, that many of these tips will have a twofold effect of helping both your body and your mind feel healthier!
1. Stand Up Straight
Correct posture involves pulling your shoulders back, holding your head high, and standing evenly over both your legs (without shifting your weight on your hips). When you stand or sit up straight, not only are you strengthening your back and your core, but you can also improve your confidence levels and self-esteem!
2. Put Down the Phone
We know, this one hurts. But as much as you hate to admit it, you know it’s good for you! Put down the phone, and step away from social media – even just for an hour or thirty minutes will help you feel a little bit healthier. Social media can create a toxic mentality of self-comparison, not to mention the numerous negative side effects of staring at a screen all day.
3. Find Five Minutes of Silence
This one goes hand-in-hand with the last one. When you put down your phone, step away from the computer screen, and find just five minutes of peace and quiet, your whole mood will improve. Whether you take this time to meditate, reflect, or just relax, you’ll see all sorts of benefits: lower heart rate, better blood pressure levels, and even increases your immune system – in addition to making you feel generally happier.
4. Ask “How Does This Decision Contribute to my Wellbeing?”
Many people, and women in particular, tend to put others’ needs and desires over their own. Instead of falling into the trap of failing your own wellbeing in favor of someone else’s, ask yourself before making major decisions, “how does this decision help me become happier, healthier, or a better version of myself?”
It may be that your answer involves the personal or intrinsic reward that you feel from helping someone else, and that’s okay! But if you’re regularly making decisions that put you in a position you hate for the sake of people you may not care about that much, well…it’s time to start asking yourself this question.
5. Be Kind to Yourself
If you’re not meeting all of your health-related goals right away, don’t beat yourself up about it. You have every right to take a rest day (or a rest week) from working out, and sometimes we all need to eat cookie dough ice cream straight from the carton. Let yourself indulge, knowing that you are still making steps toward a healthier lifestyle!
And sometimes being kind to yourself means getting a massage, or buying yourself a gym membership. Give yourself the gift of better health, and your body and mind will thank you for it.
