Can Fasting Actually be Good for You?

Often, when you’re changing your diet (whether for weight loss or for an overall lifestyle change), you’ll hear that you should eat more meals in smaller portions. Eating “five small meals a day” is a popular diet pattern touted for having major health benefits, including weight loss, boosted metabolism, increased energy, and more[1]. But is it possible that doing the opposite – AKA adapting a diet pattern of intermittent fasting – can also have pretty great health benefits as well? 

Our favorite cardiologist, Dr. Joel Kahn, says yes![2] Intermittent fasting isn’t actually a new idea: fasting has historically been a part of many cultures, religions, and lifestyles. Intermittent fasting doesn’t mean going extremely long periods of time without food. It means going maybe twelve hours at a time without eating, at different times throughout the year. You should never go multiple days without eating anything – this could be very unhealthy! But fasting every now and then can have great health benefits. 

In just 30 days, intermittent fasting can already start to show some small positive changes in your health and body. It’s important that you follow an intermittent fasting diet safely so that you don’t starve your body of much-needed nutrients or go into “starvation mode” and actually start gaining weight. Dr. Kahn recommends following the Fasting Mimicking Diet[3], which is only five days a month of low caloric intake – which means it mimics fasting without requiring you to abstain from food entirely!

"We actually benefit,” Dr. Kahn says about intermittent fasting, “Fasting turns on responses in our body that tend to actually heal damage. Plus, you'll probably end up a little bit lighter, with a little better blood pressure, a little better cholesterol, a little better blood sugar at the end of 30 days.”

Plus, the Fasting Mimicking Diet is scientifically sound and healthy. Dr. Kahn has tried it himself on several occasions and swears by it. Have you tried intermittent fasting?
